Universal Orlando Touring Plan:

Islands of Adventure One Day

By Lisa Fritscher

Universal Orlando is a large resort complex. Two gated theme parks with the CityWalk nighttime entertainment complex in between guarantee that those visiting for a week would find plenty to keep them entertained. Nonetheless, if you have only one day it is still possible to see the highlights of either park.

Islands of Adventure opened in May 1999 as “the most technologically advanced theme park in the world.” This description is still quite accurate today. Divided into a series of islands linked by foot bridges and ringing a central lagoon, Islands of Adventure is home to a wide range of attractions from thrilling roller coasters to sedate shows.

Consider purchasing a Universal Express Pass. You will need one pass for each person in your party. The pass allows you “front of line access” (in reality, a separate, much shorter queue) to each major attraction once during the day. The price of the pass varies according to season and park capacity, but is worth the investment if you have only one day to visit. With an Express Pass, you can generally expect to wait no more than fifteen minutes in line, although this is never guaranteed.

Begin your day early, at least 30 minutes prior to park opening. If you plan to purchase the Express Pass, you can do so at the Guest Services window located outside the park gates. You may also want to consider the Universal Meal Deal. The Meal Deal enables you to pay one reasonable price for a wristband that then entitles you to unlimited meals at a variety of counter service restaurants throughout the park. On each restaurant visit, you can get one entrée, one side, and one dessert, and you may visit as many times as you like. Add a refillable mug for unlimited fountain drinks. With the Meal Deal, you can stop whenever it is convenient for you.

Get a park map/show schedule when you arrive. You will want to partially plan your day around show times. Be sure not to overbook on shows, however, or you will miss the amazing rides. Exactly what you choose to see will, of course, be based on your individual interests. It can be difficult to make decisions based simply on the short park map descriptions, however, so here is a list to use as a jumping off point. Remember that this guide is simply this author’s opinion of the must-see attractions, and your own tastes may vary.

Port of Entry

Although there are no actual attractions to be found here, the architecture is amazing. Take time out for a quick breakfast at the Crescent Moon Bakery to start your morning off right.

Marvel SuperHero Island

The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman -- The most technologically advanced theme park attraction in the world, this one is absolutely not to be missed. Spiderman combines motion simulation, a track based ride vehicle, film, and live special effects for a truly amazing experience. If you only see one attraction in the park, Spiderman is the one to see.

The Incredible Hulk -- Consistently ranked one of the top twenty roller coasters in the world by a variety of coaster websites, The Incredible Hulk offers a powered launch into a series of inversions. Make sure you meet the health requirements, then enjoy the ride!

Toon Lagoon

Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls -- One of the best log flumes in the country, this one takes you through the wacky adventures of Dudley, Boris, Natasha and their friends. You will get soaked, so plan accordingly.

Jurassic Park

Jurassic Park River Adventure -- Based on the books more than the films, although those who have only seen the movies will still recognize many features. This boat ride takes you past a variety of gentle dinosaurs before veering off course into the predator area. The final drop is truly spectacular! You will get wet and may get soaked.

The Lost Continent

Dueling Dragons -- These intertwined coasters careen through a series of near misses in an epic battle in the air. Be sure to ride both (there is a spot at the exit where you can loop back into the queue without going all the way out). Ride the back of Fire and front of Ice.

Poseidon’s Fury -- This guided walkthrough attraction takes you into a gods war between Poseidon and Lord Darkenon. Worthwhile for the incredible water vortex alone.

Open Air Bazaar -- Be sure to leave some time for shopping at the Renaissance Faire-style open air market. Choose from items as diverse as tarot cards, peasant clothes, and family coats of arms.

Seuss Landing

The Cat in the Hat -- If you are a fan of classic dark rides, be sure not to miss Cat in the Hat. This ride gives the classic dark ride a decidedly modern twist.

The guide above should be used only as a jumping off point for your trip to Islands of Adventure. Many other exciting and worthwhile attractions are available at the park as well, and definitely should not be missed. Additionally, one of the best parts of the park is the seamless transitioning between completely disparate lands. Pay attention as you cross from one island to another.

While one day will not allow you to see everything, an Express Pass will assist you in seeing the highlights detailed above plus a few extras. Remember to pace yourself and take time to enjoy. You can also plan another visit to see the things that you miss this time.
